The title of this project is a combination of two songtitles “Groove is in the Heart” by Dee-Lite and “Heart of Glass” by Blondie, an off-kilter remix of the two songs served as a musical backdrop for the performance. Musically, a groove refers to the rhythmic pattern or feel that forms the foundation of a song. It's the underlying sense of rhythm that gives a piece of music its unique character.
On one hand I explore the heart as an organ that beats, functions as an engine that contracts and releases; the “groove” that enables life. Which I translated into body extensions that emphasize this contraction and release in movement.
On the other hand, I take the heart as an emotional metaphor, through which I investigate the “groove” of my own upbringing as a queer person in a Catholic matriarchal family. Represented in a remake of a dress worn by my mother when she was my age, and a stained glass sculpture.
These two sides of the research came together in a performance that resembles an 80’s pop-band concert.
